Students in social studies 8 at PHMS had the opportunity to have a firsthand look at how local government works through an engaging, hands-on project called “Run for Local Office.”

Over the course of two weeks, students have learned about the structure and function of local government, chose a local leadership role, and created a full campaign complete with research, campaign slogans, posters, flyers, speeches, and video advertisements. Students have presented their platforms to classmates as well as taken part in a mock election, giving them the opportunity to practice civic engagement, public speaking, and critical thinking. This project has helped students understand how local leaders impact their community and empowers them to see how citizens can make a difference in government at the local level.
